land of Harrison County, Mississippi, Beatrice gives Elizabeth a quit claim for an undivided half of the following land in Choctaw County ...
and the following lands in Attala County, Mississippi ... and Elizabeth agrees to pay Beatrice two notes given by one William H Keeland the husband of Elizabeth in his life time to said Beatrice for the consideration above described one note due 1 March 1852 the other due 1st March 1853 each for five hundred dollars together with all interest ... Beatrice agreeing to stop the proceedings instituted in
her name on said notes until 1st January 1853 and to pay one half of the costs that may have accrued on the suit instituted on said first note except such as has already been taxed to the said Elizabeth or been paid by her The said Elizabeth to pay the other one half and if new suits have been commenced the said Beatrice to pay all costs on same In witness thereof the said parties have hereunto set their hand & seal the day & year aforesaid Acknowledged 18 Aug 1853, Lowndes County, Mississippi. 4 1852 Feb 24 Deed, between Newton C. Gullett and Elizabeth Gullett his wife and Elizabeth Keeland the Executor of the last will and Testament of William H. Keeland, deceased, all of Harrison County, Mississippi. On 12 Mar 1851 the Gulletts sold to William H. Keeland the lands described below for $2,220 "which we then received and which we now acknowledge to have received, but which deed is Supposed to be defective, and not to convey the Said lands which belong to and were the property of the Said Elizabeth" Since Wm. H. Keeland has Since died leaving all of his estate to Elizabeth Keeland "we are willing and desirous of correcting all Error if any in Said deed and of vesting in Said devisee all the Estate, in fee Simple, in Said land." Therefore for $1 the Gulletts convey to Elizabeth Keeland, all their interest in: The undivided half of the following lands lying and being in Choctaw County, in the State of Mississippi To wit.... Also the following lands Situated, lying and being in the County of Winston State aforesaid To wit..... Also the following lands Situated lying, and being, in the County of Attalla [sic] State aforesaid.... The interest in lands lying in Octibbeha [sic] County, being only one undivided Eighth part and Containing Seventeen [sic] and Sixty acres of land ... Newton and Elizabeth acknowledged deed and Elizabeth relinquished dowerin Harrison County 24 Feb 1853.

Keeland is paid $2,020 "by certain lands heretofore belonging to Elizabeth Gullett by deeds dated 12 Mar 1851, also a negro man slave names Jerry aged 40 and a negro woman slave named Harriet, 35.

6 1853 May 24 Deed: Harrison Co., MS. Mrs. Aurilia Smith of West Feliciana Parish, LA pays $8700 to Mrs. Elizabeth Keeland, widow of the late Wm. H. Keeland and executrix, for a lot in Pass Christian that fronts 128 feet of the shores of the Gulf. 7 1853 Oct Court: Harrison Co., MS. Elizabeth Gullet and Newton C. Gullet, divorce, Chancery Court Case File #84. Elizabeth Keeland's testimony: She has known Elizabeth Gullet "since she was 7 years old." Note: Elizabeth Gullett is the Elizabeth "Gullec" who is listed in the Wm. H. Keeling [sic] household in the 1850 Pass Christian, Harrison Co., MS census. Gullet is 21 years old. Elizabeth Keeland is 35. Thus, Elizabeth Keeland has known Elizabeth Gullett since about 1836, which would be after Elizabeth Keeland married W. H. Keeland.

Witness for Elizabeth Gullet were: T. B. Pinkard [Doctor], Job G. Selph, Elizabeth Keeland.
Elizabeth said she has know Elizabeth Gullet since she was 7 years old and has known Newton C. Gullet about 4 years. The Gullets have resided in Pass Christian about 4 years. Gullet was a gambler and unprincipaled [sic]. Mrs. Gullet has about $8-10,000 which N. C. Gullet squandered.

Gustavus Hendrick stated that in 1830 he hired William B. Hendrick to be overseer for Gustavus' plantation. Gustavus stated that twenty hands worked on the planatation and required strict supervision. Gustavus claimed William went to Alabama in the fall of 1830, which required him to hire another overseer for 3-4 months during the busiest time of year for a planter. Gustavus also claimed that William made wooden items to sell for his own profit. In 1831, William sued for back wages and won the suit. Gustavus asked the court to enjoin further proceedings and grant him a new trial.

In the name of God amen I Gustavus Hendrick of the
County of Charlotte being weak in body but of perfect mid and Memory thanks
be to Almighty God calling to mind the Mortality of my body and knowing that
it is appointed to all Man once to die do make and ordain this my last will and
Testament in the Manner and form as followeth—and first I give to my son-in-
law John Eubank one negro man names Joe also one feather bed & furniture
also two cows and calves, also one mare and Saddle, also two hundred acres of that
Land bought of Robert Beasley beginning on the corner lying & being between
Walton’s old road and the Mill thence along that line to Walton’s old road thence
along the said road to Joshua Dickinson’s line thence along his line to Pettus’s
line thence along his line to Ellington’s line thence along his line to the Fen-
lators[?] thence to the beginning to him his heirs forever—Secondly I give to my
son John Hendrick the place whereon I now live with Hays ___[?] a new survey of
seventy four acres joining whereon I live also one negro Man named An
derson one beast [?] and saddle one bed and furniture two cows and calves to him
and his heirs forever—Thirdly I give to my son Benjamin Hendrick Brown’s

to my son Obediah Hendrick the remaining part of the Tract of land bought
of ___ ___ named Beasley also one negro girl named Jane one beast &

forever. Eighthly I lend to John Hay one Hundred acres of land whereon
he now lives during his natural life—Ninthly I lend to my beloved
wife Mary Hendrick the Land and Mill with all the remainder of my
Estate in order to bring up my children during her natural life or widow

equally Divided among all my children—Lastly I appoint my beloved

34 8 Apr 1831, Lowndes County, Mississippi. William B. Hendrick sued Gustavus Hendrick for wages owed to him when he was employed by Gustavus as an overseer. The case was continued by order of the court in May 1831. Gustavus sought a change of venue for the trial, claiming that the public in Lowndes County would be prejudiced against him.

35 Gustavus Hendrick was murdered by two of his slaves, George and Squire, who were hanged just below the Howard place, on the Pickensville road, which was the first public execution in Lowndes County.  Gustavus Hendrick

Kirby Stanley Keeland of New Waverly, passed away September 22, 1981. Born March 14, 1893. Was 88 years of age. Was a retired banker with the New Waverly State Bank. Served in the US Navy. Member of the First United Methodist Church of New Waverly. Member of the John Sims Lodge No. 458, AF & AM for over 50 years. Was the first mayor of New Waverly and past president of the Waverly ISD. Survivors: 1 son, TW Keeland, Huntsville; 2 grandsons, Thomas S. Keeland, Conroe and Robert W. Keeland, New Waverly; 3 great grandchildren. Services will be 3 pm Thursday, Huntsville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Hill Cemetery, New Waverly, Tx. Huntsvilled Funeral Home, Huntsville, Tx. 295-6363
